I've noticed something interesting about society and culture. Everything risky requires a license, so learning to drive, owning a gun, getting married. (Laughter)

저는 사회와 문화 속에서 흥미로운 사실을 알아차릴 수 있었습니다. 위험한 것은 자격증이 필요하다는 사실이죠. 운전 면허, 총기 소유, 결혼 같은 것들요. 어떤 확실한... (웃음)

 

That's true in everything risky except technology. For some reason, there's no standard syllabus, there's no basic course. They just sort of give you your computer and then kick you out of the nest.

위험한 건 모두 그렇습니다만, 기술은 예외입니다. 무슨 이유인지, 표준적인 강의 계획서도 없고, 기초 과정이란 것도 없습니다. 말하자면 사람들한테 컴퓨터를 건네 주고는 둥지에서 밖으로 차버리는 거죠.

 

You're supposed to learn this stuff how? Just by osmosis. Nobody ever sits down and tells you, "This is how it works." So today I'm going to tell you 10 things that you thought everybody knew, but it turns out they don't.

여러분들은 이런 걸 어떻게 배우게 됐나요? 그냥 스며든 거죠. 아무도 옆에 앉아서 "이렇게 되는 거란다" 해 주지 않아요. 그래서 저는 오늘 여러분들께 10 가지 누구나 다 안다고 생각하겠지만, 그렇지 않다고 밝혀질 것들을 말씀드릴게요.

 

All right, first of all, on the web, when you're on the web and you want to scroll down, don't pick up the mouse and use the scroll bar.

좋아요, 먼저 인터넷에서, 인터넷을 할 때 스크롤을 내리고 싶으면, 그때 마우스를 쥐어들고 스크롤 바를 내리지 마세요.

 

That's a terrible waste of time. Do that only if you're paid by the hour. Instead, hit the space bar. The space bar scrolls down one page.

정말 끔찍한 시간 낭비입니다. 수당을 시간 단위로 받는다면 그렇게 하세요. 대신, 스페이스 바를 치세요. 스페이스 바는 한 페이지씩 아래로 스크롤해 내려갑니다.

 

Hold down the Shift key to scroll back up again. So space bar to scroll down one page. It works in every browser on every kind of computer.

다시 위로 스크롤하려면 쉬프트를 같이 누르세요. 스페이스 바로 한 페이지씩 아래로 스크롤합니다. 어떤 컴퓨터에서 무슨 브라우저를 쓰든지 가능합니다.

 

Also on the web, when you're filling in one of these forms like your addresses, I assume you know that you can hit the Tab key to jump from box to box to box.

또 인터넷에서, 이렇게 생긴 창에다가 여러분의 주소 같은 것들을 채울 때, 제 생각엔 여러분도 탭 키를 눌러 박스에서 박스로 박스로 넘어가는 건 아시겠죠.

 

But what about the pop-up menu where you put in your state? Don't open the pop-up menu. That's a terrible waste of calories.

그런데 자기 주(州)를 써야 하는 팝업 창은 어떻게 하죠? 팝업 창은 열지 마세요. 정말 끔찍한 칼로리 낭비입니다.

 

Type the first letter of your state over and over and over. So if you want Connecticut, go, C, C, C. If you want Texas, go T, T, and you jump right to that thing without even opening the pop-up menu.

자기 주의 첫째 글자를 계속, 계속, 계속 치세요. 코네티컷을 쳐야 하면 C, C, C를 치세요. 텍사스면 T, T를 누르고 바로 오른쪽으로 팝업 창을 열 필요도 없이 넘어갈 수 있습니다.

 

Also on the web, when the text is too small, what you do is hold down the Control key and hit plus, plus, plus. You make the text larger with each tap.

또 인터넷에서, 글자가 너무 작을 때는 컨트롤 키를 누르면서 +, +, +를 치면 됩니다. 누를 때마다 글자를 크게 만들 수 있습니다.

 

It works on every computer, every web browser, or minus, minus, minus to get smaller again. If you're on the Mac, it might be Command instead

이것도 컴퓨터, 브라우저에 상관없이 되고, 작게 만들려면 -, -, -를 치면 됩니다. 맥킨토시을 쓴다면, 대신 커맨드를 눌러야겠죠.

 

When you're typing on your Blackberry, Android, iPhone, don't bother switching layouts to the punctuation layout to hit the period and then a space and then try to capitalize the next letter.

블랙베리, 안드로이드, 아이폰으로 글자를 입력할 때, 귀찮게 구두점 찍는 레이아웃으로 설정을 바꿔서 마침표 찍고, 띄어 쓰기하고, 대문자 쓰고 하려고 하지 마세요.

 

Just hit the space bar twice. The phone puts the period, the space, and the capital for you. Go space, space. It is totally amazing.

그냥 스페이스 바를 두 번 치세요. 핸드폰이 마침표, 띄어쓰기를 해 주고 대문자로 바꿔줍니다. 알아서! 스페이스, 스페이스. 진짜로 놀랍습니다.

 

Also when it comes to cell phones, on all phones, if you want to redial somebody that you've dialed before, all you have to do is hit the call button, and it puts the last phone number into the box for you, and at that point you can hit call again to actually dial it.

또 핸드폰에서, 어떤 폰이든지, 전에 전화했던 누군가한테 재다이얼하고 싶으면, 해야 할 건 통화 버튼을 누르는 겁니다. 그러면 마지막으로 통화한 번호가 박스에 나오고, 바로 그 때 통화 버튼을 눌러서 재다이얼할 수 있죠.

 

So you don't need to go into the recent calls list, so if you're trying to get through to somebody, just hit the call button again.

그러면 최근 통화 목록으로 갈 필요도 없고, 그러니까 누군가 연락할 사람이 있을 때, 그냥 통화 버튼만 누르세요.

 

Here's something that drives me crazy. When I call you and leave a message on your voicemail, I hear you saying, "Leave a message," and then I get these 15 seconds of frickin' instructions, like we haven't had answering machines for 45 years! (Laughter)

저를 미치게 만드는 것이 있는데요. 여러분한테 전화해서 음성사서함에 메시지를 남겨야 할 때, 여러분이 "메시지를 남기세요" 하는 걸 듣고, 그 다음 15초 동안 성질 나는 사용 방법을, 자동 응답기를 45년 못 써본 사람처럼 들어야 돼요! (웃음)

 

I'm not bitter. So it turns out there's a keyboard shortcut that lets you jump directly to the beep like this.

저 화 안 났고요. 어쨌든 여기서도 단축 키를 눌러서 삐 소리로 바로 넘어가는 방법이 있습니다.

David Pogue: Unfortunately, the carriers didn't adopt the same keystroke, so it's different by carrier, so it devolves upon you to learn the keystroke for the person you're calling. I didn't say these were going to be perfect.

불행하게도, 통신사들 설정이 전부 같지는 않아서 통신사마다 다르기 때문에, 전화하는 사람에 맞춰서 단축 키를 배우는 건 여러분들 자신에게 달렸습니다. 완벽하게 될 거라고는 한 적 없어요.

 

Okay, so most of you think of Google as something that lets you look up a webpage, but it is also a dictionary.

네, 대부분 여러분들 생각에 구글이 웹페이지를 찾는 곳이겠지만, 사실은 사전이기도 합니다.

 

Type the word "define" and then the word you want to know. You don't even have to click anything. There's the definition as you type. It's also a complete FAA database.

"define"이라고 치고 뒤에 여러분이 궁금한 단어를 쓰세요. 뭔가 클릭할 필요도 없습니다. 치면 그대로 정의가 나와요. 또 구글은 완벽한 FAA(미 항공청) 데이터베이스입니다.

 

Type the name of the airline and the flight. It shows you where the flight is, the gate, the terminal, how long till it lands. You don't need an app for that.

항공사 이름과 편명을 치세요. 어디 편인지, 몇 번 게이트인지, 무슨 터미널인지, 착륙은 얼마 남았는지 보여줍니다. 앱이 필요가 없어요.

 

It's also a unit and currency conversion. Again, you don't have to click one of the results. Just type it into the box, and there's your answer.

또 단위나 통화 환산도 가능합니다. 다시 말하는데, 이 결과들을 위해서 클릭 한 번 할 필요가 없습니다. 그냥 박스에 글자를 치면, 답이 나옵니다.

 

While we're talking about text, when you want to highlight -- this is just an example. (Laughter) When you want to highlight a word, please don't waste your life dragging across it with the mouse like a newbie. Double click the word.

문자에 대한 이야기를 하자면, 강조를 하고 싶을 때 - 예를 하나 들죠. (웃음) 단어 하나를 강조하고 싶을 때, 초보자처럼 마우스로 그걸 드래그하면서 인생을 낭비하지는 마세요. 단어를 더블 클릭하세요.

 

Watch 200. I go double click. It neatly selects just that word. Also, don't delete what you've highlighted. You can just type over it. This is in every program.

200 보세요. 더블 클릭합니다. 멋있게 그 단어만 골라 줍니다. 또, 강조해 놓은 걸 지우지 마세요. 타이핑만 하면 됩니다. 어느 프로그램이든지 됩니다.

 

Also, you can go double click, drag to highlight in one-word increments as you drag. Much more precise. Again, don't bother deleting. Just type over it. (Laughter)

또, 더블 클릭한 다음에 드래그시 한 단어씩 증가시키며 강조할 수 있습니다. 좀 더 정확하게는. 그러니까, 귀찮게 지우지 마세요. 그냥 입력하세요. (웃음)

 

Shutter lag is the time between your pressing the shutter button and the moment the camera actually snaps. It's extremely frustrating on any camera under 1,000 dollars. (Camera click) (Laughter)

"셔터 랙(Shutter lag)"은 여러분이 셔터를 누르는 때와 카메라가 사진을 찍을 때의 시간 차이를 말합니다. 특히 1,000달러 이하의 카메라에서는 짜증나는 일이죠. (찰칵) (웃음)

 

So that's because the camera needs time to calculate the focus and the exposure, but if you pre-focus with a half-press, leave your finger down, no shutter lag!

왜냐하면 카메라에게 초점과 노출을 계산할 시간이 필요하기 때문이죠. 하지만 반셔터를 눌러서 미리 초점을 맞추고, 손가락으로 누르면, 셔터랙이 없어집니다!

 

You get it every time. I've just turned your $50 camera into a $1,000 camera with that trick.

할 때마다 가능합니다. 제가 방금 여러분의 50달러짜리 카메라를 방금 1,000달러짜리로 바꿔 놓은 셈이죠.

 

And finally, it often happens that you're giving a talk, and for some reason the audience is looking at the slide instead of at you! (Laughter)

마지막으로, 가끔 강의를 할 때 있을 수 있는 상황인데, 무슨 이유인지 몰라도 관중들이 슬라이드만 쳐다보죠? 여러분들 말고요! (웃음)

 

So when that happens, this works in Keynote, PowerPoint, it works in every program, all you do is hit the letter B key,

그럴 때는, 키노트나 파워포인트, 어떤 프로그램에서든지 B를 누를 수 있습니다.

 

B for blackout, to black out the slide and make everybody look at you, and then when you're ready to go on, you hit B again, and if you're really on a roll, you can hit the W key for whiteout, and you white out the slide, and then you can hit W again to unblank it.

B로 암전, 슬라이드를 암전시켜서 모두 여러분을 쳐다보게 하고, 다시 해야 할 때가 되면, 다시 B를 누르고, 정말 열중해 있다면, 화이트아웃을 위해 W를 누르고, 슬라이드를 하얗게 만들고, 그 다음에 다시 W를 눌러서 되돌릴 수 있죠.
